Nigerian music artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, spent the night in police custody after failing to meet bail conditions set for his release following his arrest over a N14 million debt. Portable incurred the debt when he purchased a G-Wagon from a car dealer in Lagos State.
A source confirmed the development, stating that bail conditions were set for Portable’s release upon his arrest on Tuesday, but he failed to meet them.
“He is still in police custody as we speak. When he paid N13 million for the G-Wagon that cost N27 million and refused to pay the balance, the car dealer asked him to return the vehicle when his excuse was that it was bad but he also refused,” the source explained.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, also confirmed Portable’s continued detention, stating, “He has presented no reliable surety yet so he (Portable) is still with us.”
Viral videos captured the moment police attempted to arrest Portable, with one showing him attempting to evade arrest by fleeing the scene. Despite being pursued and eventually pinned down by the police, Portable resisted arrest, leading to a physical struggle captured in another video.
The incident sparked mixed reactions, with some condemning Portable for resisting arrest and others criticizing him for not paying the N14 million balance owed for the vehicle, thereby tarnishing his reputation in society.
Portable’s refusal to pay the balance despite the car dealer’s efforts to resolve the matter led to police intervention, as reported earlier by PUNCH Online.
