In a commanding performance, Aryna Sabalenka, the authoritative Belarusian world number two, swept aside China’s Zheng Qinwen on Saturday, successfully defending her Australian Open title. Sabalenka’s impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 76 minutes marks her second Grand Slam crown and makes her the first woman in over a decade to achieve a title defense at the tournament.
The 25-year-old displayed an incredible combination of power and poise throughout the fortnight, clinching the title without dropping a set in any of her seven matches. The last woman to achieve a successful title defense at the Australian Open was Victoria Azarenka in 2013.
Sabalenka’s recent accomplishments solidify her status as one of the game’s most consistent contenders in Grand Slam events. Over the past six majors, she has reached at least the semi-finals, made three finals, and secured two victories.
Dressed in vivid red, Sabalenka overwhelmed Zheng with her potent groundstrokes, targeting both corners, and a reliable serve. Despite Zheng’s first-time entry into a Grand Slam final without facing a seed, the gulf in class became evident as Sabalenka dominated from the start.
The Belarusian secured an early break in Zheng’s opening service game, capitalizing on a 15-40 advantage. Although Zheng managed to get on the board in the fourth game, Sabalenka closed out the first set in 33 minutes.
In the second set, three double faults by Zheng, including one on break point, put her at a disadvantage. Sabalenka further extended her lead with another break, showcasing her control with a perfectly executed drop shot. Despite Zheng’s efforts, Sabalenka closed out the match, saving four championship points.
While Zheng’s breakthrough tournament will see her enter the world’s top 10 in the upcoming rankings, Sabalenka remains the number two player, with Iga Swiatek, who exited in the third round, holding the top spot.
