Amid ongoing internal turbulence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has made a passionate appeal to party members, urging them to remain steadfast and work towards reviving the party rather than abandoning it.
Saraki’s call came on Wednesday through a statement published on his official Facebook page, following his participation in a PDP Consultative Conference held in Abuja. The high-level meeting was convened by Professor Jerry Gana, one of the founding fathers of the PDP, and brought together prominent stakeholders seeking a path forward amid the party’s deepening internal fractures.
“It was an honour to join the Founding Fathers and stakeholders of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, today at the Consultative Conference,” Saraki stated, stressing the importance of unity and collective responsibility.
Drawing on the PDP’s legacy, Saraki reminded members that the party once led Nigeria to become Africa’s largest economy, promoting national cohesion and institutional progress during its 16-year rule. He cautioned against deserting the party during its time of crisis, using a powerful metaphor to describe the situation.
“Let’s not abandon a ship in need of repairs. If you must leave, let it be on ideology—not anger,” he said. “The ultimate goal must be to put Nigeria first and rise above the propaganda designed to divide us as a party.”
Saraki commended Professor Gana for initiating the dialogue, referring to it as a much-needed “family meeting” at a critical time. He reaffirmed his personal allegiance to the PDP, vowing not to quit on the party or its ideals.
“The PDP was built on solid foundations. Its founders handed it over to us with trust. God forbid that we become the generation that lets it fall apart,” he warned.
Calling on party loyalists across the country, Saraki urged for renewed commitment to rebuilding and reforming the PDP from within, stating that abandoning the platform now would be a disservice to the nation and the party’s enduring democratic vision.
“I urge all true patriots of the PDP to agree that for the greater good of Nigeria, leaving is not an option,” he concluded.
