Seven miners have died after a mining pit collapsed on them in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday evening while the miners were working at the site.
A resident of the community, Albert Danlami, said the collapse happened at about 7 p.m., trapping the miners underground.
According to him, residents and other miners immediately rushed to the site and began rescue efforts after the earth suddenly caved in.
Danlami said the incident caused panic in the community as residents gathered at the mining site in an attempt to rescue those trapped.
He added that some people also sustained injuries in the incident.
The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident to journalists.
Tengwong said rescue efforts were launched following the collapse, but the trapped miners were eventually found dead.
The incident has renewed concerns over safety measures at mining sites in the state, where pit collapses have previously resulted in fatalities.
