In a recent statement, Spotify, the renowned online streaming platform, has recognized Nigerian rapper and record executive Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as “Olamide,” as the ‘most influential street pop artiste of his generation.’ Benewaah Boateng, Spotify’s editor for West Africa, made the announcement, highlighting Olamide’s pivotal role in elevating Street Pop to mainstream recognition as a distinct music genre.
Boateng commended the undeniable rise of the sub-genre “Street Pop” in Nigeria, describing it as remarkable and thrilling. Olamide, known for hits like “Eni Duro,” has consistently been acknowledged for popularizing dance styles such as “Shakiti Bobo” and introducing street lingos like “Baddo Sneh” and “Pepper Dem.”
The Spotify editor emphasized Olamide’s cultural impact and his role through his record label YBNL in discovering and nurturing emerging talents within the street pop scene. According to Boateng, Street Pop, characterized by its engaging rhythm, pulsating beats, and lyrics reflecting everyday Nigerian life, has significantly influenced the country’s music landscape in 2023.
Olamide secured the ninth spot in Spotify’s list of top 10 artists in Nigeria. His recent project, “Unruly,” received widespread acclaim, with the track “Gaza” resonating exceptionally well among audiences for its appeal and musical craftsmanship.
Boateng also highlighted Seyi Vibez’s emergence as a force in the Nigerian street pop scene, particularly in 2023. Known for phrases like “na ham, na ham” from his hit song “Chance,” Seyi Vibez has gained popularity among Gen-Zs and millennials, selling out concerts and securing features on hit songs like “Gwagwalada.”
Additionally, Zinoleesky was recognized for reshaping and contributing substantially to the street pop genre, earning a spot among the top 15 most streamed artists in Nigeria.
Boateng concluded by noting that as street pop artistes continue to explore new creative frontiers, the genre is poised for exponential growth in the years to come. The recognition from Spotify further solidifies the influence of Olamide and other street pop artists on the Nigerian music scene.
