Nigerian international William Troost-Ekong has clinched the 2023-2024 Greek Super League title with PAOK FC. The victory was secured on Sunday night with a tense 2-1 win against Aris, propelling PAOK to their fourth league championship with 80 points from 36 matches, edging out AEK Athens by two points.
The decisive match saw Brandon Thomas put PAOK ahead on the hour mark, only for Loren Moron to level the score for Aris just two minutes into the second half. However, Taison’s decisive goal in the 62nd minute sealed the victory, igniting jubilant celebrations among PAOK supporters.
Although Troost-Ekong did not feature in the matchday squad, his contributions throughout the season were significant. The 30-year-old centre-back made 10 league appearances for the White and Blacks before undergoing surgery following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February. His defensive prowess was crucial in PAOK’s successful campaign.
Troost-Ekong, who recently resumed full training, expressed his elation on social media platform X, posting, “CHAMPIONS OF GREECE.” Joining PAOK in 2023, Troost-Ekong has quickly become a key player for both the club and the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles.
Manager Razvan Lucescu praised Troost-Ekong’s efforts and the team’s resilience throughout the season. “William has been instrumental for us, and his commitment and performance have been exemplary. This title is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every player,” Lucescu said.
With the Greek Super League title now in their grasp, PAOK and Troost-Ekong are already looking forward to defending their crown next season and making a strong impact in European competitions.
