The Super Eagles of Nigeria have fallen to the 38th position in the latest FIFA men’s rankings, marking a significant drop of eight places from their previous 30th position. The updated rankings were released on Thursday morning, highlighting the challenges faced by the team in recent international fixtures.
The decline in rankings follows a string of disappointing performances. The Super Eagles managed only a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and subsequently suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in a match held in Ivory Coast. These results have adversely affected Nigeria’s standing in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
In the African context, Nigeria has also slipped in the rankings, now positioned fifth on the continent. They are ranked behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Cote d’Ivoire, respectively.
Globally, the reigning world champions Argentina have retained their top spot in the FIFA rankings. They are followed by France, Belgium, Brazil, and England, completing the top five.
The rankings also saw the Lone Stars of Liberia making significant progress. Liberia climbed 10 places to reach their highest-ever rank of 142nd, gaining 37.47 points in the process. Conversely, Equatorial Guinea experienced the largest decline, dropping 10 positions and losing 47.53 points, reflecting a substantial decrease in their ranking.
San Marino continues to occupy the bottom spot in the rankings of 210 teams, while Eritrea remains the only unranked country.
