President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to combat terrorism, banditry, and other security threats, assuring Nigerians that efforts are underway to secure the release of all citizens held captive across the country.

The president gave the assurance on Sunday during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu said the Federal Government remains committed to protecting lives and property while addressing the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

He described recent attacks, kidnappings, and other acts of violence as painful reminders of the work still required to restore lasting peace and security nationwide.

According to the president, the safe return of all persons in captivity remains a top national priority, adding that security agencies have continued to receive the necessary support and resources to safeguard communities and defend the country’s territorial integrity.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Tinubu declared.

Akume said the president remains fully committed to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities and is prepared to intensify efforts aimed at reducing the socio-economic hardships facing citizens through the delivery of sustainable democratic dividends.

He acknowledged the difficulties confronting many Nigerians, including economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement in several parts of the country, stressing that the government is aware of the suffering and is working to address it.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said, noting that Tinubu is tackling the challenges with compassion and determination.

The SGF congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the achievement as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the return of democracy.

He also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, many of whom, he said, endured persecution, injuries, and even death in pursuit of democratic rule.

With preparations gradually building toward the 2027 general elections, Akume urged young Nigerians to resist being used for political violence, thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic division, or religious intolerance.

He called on citizens to reject hate speech and divisive politics, warning that democracy should not be turned into a battleground for conflict.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he said.

Akume further appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, media organisations, and families to promote peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and responsible civic conduct as the nation approaches another election cycle.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values and interfaith harmony, he said the country’s institutions remain strong despite prevailing challenges.

The SGF also commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the nation and sustaining democratic governance.

He urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of the June 12 heroes by working towards a country where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are secure, and citizens can live with dignity.

The Democracy Day church service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” attracted several dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.
