President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s refusal to negotiate with terrorists or release detained suspects in exchange for hostages, following the death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe in captivity.
The President made the declaration on Saturday while reacting to reports that the former Nigerian Army spokesman died while being held by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu condemned the actions of the terrorists and insisted that his administration would not yield to pressure from criminal groups seeking the release of their detained members.
“While the terrorists have done their worst, the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies,” the President said.
Tinubu reiterated his earlier warning to bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors, urging them to surrender or face the full force of the law.
“As I said on June 12, bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever, and no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” he stated.
The President said the death of General Abubakar should strengthen the nation’s resolve against terrorism, stressing that criminal groups must be treated as enemies of the state and not engaged in negotiations.
According to him, “General Abubakar’s death should serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, reinforcing our resolve never to negotiate with them on any terms.”
Tinubu also expressed shock over the retired military officer’s death and extended condolences to his family, the Katsina State Government, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The late General Abubakar, who had retired after a distinguished military career, was reportedly travelling to his hometown when he was abducted by armed terrorists.
The President particularly sympathised with the family of the deceased, expressing concern for his wife, who was reportedly still being held by the captors at the time of the statement.
He urged Nigerians to remain united in the fight against insecurity, expressing confidence that the country would ultimately overcome terrorism and emerge stronger.
“As Nigerians, we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation,” Tinubu said.
