President Bola Tinubu will today host the Super Falcons and officials of Nigeria’s women’s national football team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following their stunning victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The nine-time champions added a record 10th continental title to their name after pulling off a remarkable comeback in the final against hosts Morocco. Trailing 2–0 at one stage, the Falcons fought back with determination, securing a 3–2 victory in front of a roaring crowd in Rabat.
The team arrived in Abuja on Sunday night to a warm reception ahead of their meeting with the president. Tinubu, who personally called the team after the final, had earlier approved payment of their long-outstanding allowances and bonuses before the championship decider.
According to sources at the State House, the reception at the Villa will not only celebrate the team’s sporting success but may also see the players and coaching staff receive special rewards in recognition of their hard work, resilience, and unity in achieving continental glory.
In his congratulatory message, the president praised the team for their spirit and impact on the nation’s morale. “You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation, and we are all very happy,” Tinubu said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In a post-match video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the players, and coaching staff, Tinubu reiterated the nation’s pride in their achievement. “On behalf of all Nigerians—at home, in Morocco, and around the world—I told them how proud we are. They have lifted our spirits with their brilliance, resilience, and unity. I look forward to welcoming them home,” he said.
The president also commended the technical crew, team management, sports ministry, and football administrators for their role in supporting the team to victory. He promised that today’s reception will mark the beginning of a broader celebration of their success.
With their 10th WAFCON title secured, the Super Falcons have reaffirmed their status as Africa’s most successful women’s national football team—bringing another proud moment to Nigeria’s sporting history.
