In a high-profile meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to reforming his country, regardless of any potential backlash that could tarnish his reputation.
Speaking during a meeting with António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, President Tinubu emphasized his determination to bring about positive change in Nigeria. This commitment was highlighted in a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson, on Thursday.
*President Tinubu recounted his history of activism and struggle for democracy, noting that he had been detained in the past for his efforts. Undaunted by the challenges he faced, he expressed his conviction that democracy held the key to addressing the pressing development needs of Nigeria and the African continent.
The Nigerian leader expressed his concerns about the prevalent high levels of poverty in the country, asserting that there had been too much talk and insufficient action to alleviate the suffering of the people. He stated, “We must not be ashamed of that history, but poverty is unacceptable. I am one of the lucky survivors of gripping poverty.”
With a population of over 240 million, Nigeria boasts a substantial youth demographic. President Tinubu stressed that it was time for concrete actions to change the nation’s narrative, even if such decisions led to temporary unpopularity.
Since taking office on May 29, President Tinubu’s economic decisions, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates, have sparked criticism. Nevertheless, many analysts have lauded these policies as long-overdue reforms, despite rising inflation and a high cost of living.
President Tinubu consistently reassured the public that these measures were only temporary and were essential for birthing a new Nigeria.
Secretary-General Guterres commended President Tinubu’s reform agenda, acknowledging that it had generated high expectations within the United Nations. He pledged continued support from the global organization and stated, “Nigeria is an indispensable voice in the sub-region. We will give you every support needed for your success to be achieved. Your success is Africa’s success, and we wish you well.”
President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to reforming Nigeria, even in the face of challenges, underscores his determination to bring about meaningful change and development in the country.
