
In a devastating incident at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated staff member, met a tragic end on Monday after being attacked and killed by a lion under his care.
Olabode, employed in the zoological department and responsible for the welfare of the animals, was reportedly feeding the lion when the unexpected attack occurred. Despite the valiant efforts of fellow staff members to rescue him, their attempts proved futile, resulting in Olabode’s untimely demise.
Confirming the harrowing incident, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that the management team swiftly convened and adjourned a meeting upon learning of the tragic event. He disclosed that the nine-year-old male lion involved in the attack had been euthanized following the incident.
According to Olarewaju, Olabode Olawuyi, a seasoned Veterinary Technologist with over a decade of experience in managing the zoological garden, fell victim to the lion’s aggression while carrying out his duties. Despite the frantic efforts to administer first aid and medical assistance, Olabode succumbed to his injuries.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, who promptly arrived at the scene, was briefed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, on the futile rescue efforts. Saddened by the tragic turn of events, the decision was made to euthanize the lion responsible for the fatal attack.
It was revealed that Olabode had diligently cared for the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, the very lion he nurtured tragically turned on him, resulting in his demise.
The university management has extended its heartfelt condolences to Olabode’s widow and children, urging them to find solace in the divine while pledging full support to the bereaved family during this difficult time. Additionally, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to uncover both immediate and underlying causes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
