U.S. Warns Nigerians: Overstaying Visas Could Lead to Deportation, Lifetime Travel Ban

The United States government has issued a strong warning to Nigerian citizens regarding overstaying their visas, stating that such violations could result in deportation and even a permanent ban from entering the U.S. in the future.

This comes amid a wave of stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration, which recently unveiled a set of new travel restrictions and visa regulations specifically targeting Nigerian travelers.

In a statement posted Monday via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, the embassy reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on immigration infractions:

“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on travelling to the United States in the future.”

Visa Policy Changes Spark Concern

Last week, the U.S. government announced new visa curbs as part of its reciprocity policy, citing concerns over visa overstays, national security threats, and fraudulent documentation. Among the changes:

  • Non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas for Nigerians are now limited to three-month single-entry permits.
  • A newly imposed $250 Visa Integrity Fee is now mandatory for all applicants seeking tourist (B-1/B-2), student (F and M), worker (H-1B), and exchange visitor (J) visas.
  • Additional non-waivable surcharges have been introduced, including a $24 I-94 fee and a $13 ESTA fee for Visa Waiver Program travelers.

Only diplomatic categories (A and G) are exempt from the fees and restrictions.

Mandatory Social Media Screening

In a move that has sparked privacy concerns, the U.S. Embassy now requires all F, M, and J visa applicants to list their social media usernames and adjust privacy settings to public as part of a new vetting process.

“Every visa adjudication is a national security decision,” the U.S. Mission stated. “Effective immediately, all individuals applying for student and exchange visas must ensure their social media profiles are visible to facilitate proper identity checks.”

This screening measure is aimed at helping immigration officials detect red flags and verify applicant backgrounds as part of enhanced national security protocols.

Trump’s Hardline Immigration Agenda

Since taking office, President Trump has pursued a tough immigration agenda aimed at cracking down on illegal migration and increasing scrutiny of visa applicants. His administration has enacted a series of executive orders mandating rigorous background checks and enhanced border security.

The latest restrictions are seen as part of the broader push to enforce compliance with visa rules and reduce illegal overstays, a concern that U.S. immigration authorities have frequently linked to Nigeria.

Officials at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not yet issued an official response to the developments, though diplomatic sources indicate discussions may be underway to address the growing restrictions on Nigerian travelers.

What This Means for Nigerians

Immigration experts warn that the consequences of overstaying a visa in the U.S. are now more severe than ever under current rules. Individuals caught violating their visa terms risk:

  • Immediate removal from the U.S.
  • Long-term or lifetime travel bans
  • Ineligibility for future visas or immigration benefits

Travelers are advised to adhere strictly to their visa conditions and consult legal experts before overstaying or changing visa categories while in the U.S.

As global mobility becomes increasingly restricted, Nigerians planning to visit or study in the U.S. are urged to comply fully with immigration laws to avoid jeopardizing future travel opportunities.
