UK Court Jails Nigerian Man for Sexual Assault at London Railway Station

A United Kingdom court has sentenced a Nigerian national, Obinwa Obichukwu, to two years’ imprisonment after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman twice at Euston railway station in London.

The 45-year-old, who resides on Armstrong Close in Hertfordshire, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on July 21 after a jury found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault in January, according to a statement released Tuesday by the British Transport Police.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and directed that Obichukwu remain on the UK Sex Offenders Register for a decade.

Authorities said the assaults occurred on the evening of August 20, 2023, after Obichukwu approached a woman walking toward Euston station. He reportedly initiated a conversation by asking what music she was listening to before placing his arm around her shoulders and urging her to accompany him home.

Police said the victim continued walking along Euston Road, but Obichukwu repeatedly grabbed her hand and declared his love for her. He allegedly blocked her from entering the railway station and sexually assaulted her at the entrance.

The woman later descended the escalator toward the London Underground platforms, where investigators said Obichukwu followed her and carried out a second sexual assault near the ticket barriers.

The victim eventually managed to push him away, escape the station, and report the incident to authorities.

Following an investigation, British Transport Police officers traced Obichukwu to his Hertfordshire residence, where he was arrested.

Investigators said the victim’s account, corroborated by CCTV footage, provided sufficient evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service to charge him with two counts of sexual assault.

Reacting to the conviction, Detective Constable Daniel Burke described the offender as a “sexual predator” who deliberately targeted a lone woman at a busy transport hub.

Burke said the defendant’s claim that the encounters were consensual was rejected by the jury, adding that the sentence reflects the force’s commitment to tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls.

He also urged members of the public to report incidents of harassment or sexual violence on the railway network, assuring that police would continue to pursue offenders and bring them to justice.
