The United States Embassy in Abuja has stopped processing routine visa applications, directing applicants to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos for such services.
The change took effect on August 1, 2026, according to the latest visa advisory from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
Under the new arrangement, routine visa services in Nigeria are now handled at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.
However, applicants who already had appointments scheduled at the Abuja embassy will still be attended to, although some appointments may have been rescheduled.
Those with existing Abuja appointments have been advised to check their email for information about any changes to their appointment dates.
The U.S. authorities also clarified that applicants with unused and still-valid MRV visa fee receipts can use them to schedule new appointments at the Lagos consulate.
The development means Nigerians seeking routine U.S. visa services will generally need to make arrangements to travel to Lagos for their appointments.
Applicants have been advised to consult the official U.S. visa appointment platform for updated information on appointment scheduling, visa services and operating arrangements.
