Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the actor’s death in an Instagram post on Wednesday, describing him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” Olusoji wrote.
He also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn their loss.
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most respected veteran actors, enjoying a career that spanned theatre, television and film. His distinctive voice, commanding screen presence and versatility made him one of the most recognisable figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London and began his acting career in British television. He subsequently appeared in several international productions before returning to Nigeria, where he established himself as a major figure in the country’s growing film industry.
Over the years, he featured in numerous Nigerian films and received several industry honours for his contribution to African cinema. Among the recognitions associated with his career are the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in film production and the development of the performing arts. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was associated with the Lufodo Group, contributing to Nigeria’s theatre and film sectors.
His death marks the loss of one of the enduring figures of Nigeria’s performing arts, whose career helped shape generations of African actors and audiences.
