Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has met with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as efforts to strengthen political reconciliation in the state gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike led a delegation of Rainbow Coalition leaders to Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Those present included the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state, Kingsley Chinda, and former Senator Magnus Abe.
The reason for the meeting was not immediately disclosed. However, it marked Wike’s first known visit to Fubara since the political crisis that severely strained their relationship and subsequent efforts to restore peace between the two political camps.
The meeting came after the reconciliation committee led by Abe held two meetings with Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The committee has been working on ways to accommodate the governor’s supporters within the emerging political arrangement in the state.
Fubara had previously declared at a public event in Port Harcourt that he had returned to his political family following the resolution of the dispute.
Sources familiar with Tuesday’s meeting described it as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate the reconciliation and prepare the ground for greater political cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.
One source, who requested anonymity, said the visit was “strategic” and represented another step in the fence-mending process.
“It is also part of measures to cement the renewed peace in the state. You know the Senator Magnus Abe-led reconciliation committee has met with the governor twice,” the source said.
“Now, maybe it’s time for the FCT minister to visit the governor to show that peace has truly returned,” the source added.
The Rainbow Coalition has yet to formally commence its campaign for the 2027 elections, but Tuesday’s meeting reportedly brought together prominent supporters of Fubara and leaders of the coalition.
The two sides were said to have discussed plans to work together and develop a common political strategy aimed at securing victory in the state during the forthcoming general elections.
The meeting is being viewed as another indication that the political differences between the camps may be giving way to a new phase of cooperation in Rivers State.
