Amid growing speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Goodluck Jonathan and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi held a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Obi, who made the visit known through a post on his official X handle, described Jonathan as his “elder brother, statesman, and leader,” noting that their discussion focused on the state of the nation.
“Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation,” Obi wrote.
Although the two politicians have not disclosed details of their discussions, the meeting has stirred political circles, coming at a time when conversations about Nigeria’s direction under Bola Tinubu’s administration are intensifying.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has in recent years built a reputation as a respected mediator in national and continental affairs, particularly in conflict resolution and efforts to strengthen democracy across Africa.
Obi, who placed third in the 2023 presidential election behind All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Tinubu and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar, has continued to engage influential stakeholders as he positions himself as a key voice in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Thursday’s meeting is the latest in Obi’s series of high-profile consultations with prominent political figures. Observers see these engagements as potential groundwork for a new political coalition that could reshape the nation’s political landscape.
Speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to active politics has also grown since the PDP zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. There are reports suggesting the party may be making overtures to Obi to return to its fold, viewing him as a major contender capable of challenging President Tinubu in 2027.
Efforts to reach Obi’s former campaign spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, and leaders of the Obidient Movement for comments were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.
Political analysts believe the Jonathan-Obi meeting underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political terrain as the 2027 race gradually begins to take shape.
