The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of nine unexploded ordnances (UXOs) from the site of the recent deadly explosion at Yongxing Steel Company, located along Ring Road in the Mariri area of the state.
In an official statement released by the Deputy Public Relations Officer, DSP Hussaini Abdullahi, the police clarified that the blast was caused by an old military ordnance and not an improvised explosive device (IED), as was initially suspected.
“Contrary to earlier speculation, police findings revealed that the explosion resulted from a UXO and not an IED,” the statement said. “Following further search efforts, two additional UXOs were discovered, bringing the total recovered to nine.”
According to the statement, police investigations established that the ordnances had been unknowingly transported from Yobe State alongside scrap metal. One of the devices detonated accidentally during the offloading process at the steel company, resulting in casualties and structural damage.
The police have since cordoned off the area and deployed explosive ordnance disposal experts in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure public safety.
“There is no imminent security threat to residents,” DSP Abdullahi assured. “We urge the public to remain calm and report any suspicious items or activities.”
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, visited the scene and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the five victims who lost their lives in the explosion. He also wished a swift recovery to several injured persons currently receiving treatment at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the incident as a “cowardly act” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He also called for improved vigilance in the handling and transportation of scrap materials.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine how the explosive devices made their way into the civilian supply chain and to prevent such tragedies in the future.
