ABUJA — In a major diplomatic milestone, Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, arrived in Abuja on Tuesday for the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), marking a renewed commitment to South-South cooperation and bilateral partnership between the two economic powerhouses.

The Brazilian delegation touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where they were warmly received by high-ranking Nigerian officials, including the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

Speaking at the airport, Senator Hadejia hailed the visit as “a pivotal moment” in the implementation of Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

“Brazil is not only a global player but also a vital South-South ally. Their experience in agribusiness, green energy, and industrial expansion complements Nigeria’s development priorities. This dialogue is a clear step toward transforming our longstanding diplomatic relationship into impactful partnerships,” Hadejia said.

The ongoing three-day dialogue is expected to produce over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between both countries, spanning critical sectors such as defence and security, agricultural technology transfer, energy transition, education, and cultural exchange.

Government officials confirmed that technical committees have been working behind the scenes to finalize agreements designed to boost job creation, improve food security, and foster innovation in both countries.

One of the flagship items on the agenda is a proposed defence cooperation framework that will enhance joint military training, equipment exchange, and intelligence sharing — a move seen as vital for combating transnational threats across the Atlantic corridor.

The summit will also feature bilateral roundtables, business-to-business sessions, and a joint press conference aimed at outlining the roadmap for long-term economic integration between Brazil and Nigeria.

Vice President Alckmin is expected to meet with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa before co-chairing the main session of the Strategic Dialogue, where both sides will present their sectoral priorities and future collaboration strategies.

The Nigeria-Brazil SDM was first inaugurated in 2022 to deepen diplomatic, economic, and technical cooperation between both nations, with a vision of establishing one of the most robust bilateral frameworks within the Global South.

Diplomats from both countries have described this latest session as “historic,” citing shared democratic values, strong trade ties, and mutual goals for sustainable development as pillars of the partnership.

With over $1.5 billion in annual trade volume between the two countries and untapped potential in manufacturing, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure, the summit is seen as a springboard to a new era of strategic engagement between Africa’s largest economy and Latin America’s biggest nation.
