Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, just hours after a high-profile phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to yield any progress toward peace.
The overnight barrage, which hit multiple regions across Ukraine, involved 539 drones and 11 missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. At least 23 people were wounded in what Ukrainian officials described as the most extensive drone and missile offensive since the war began.
The timing of the attack has drawn global attention, coming on the heels of the Trump-Putin phone conversation, which ended without a breakthrough. President Trump, who has previously expressed hopes of brokering a ceasefire, admitted that no progress was made. Meanwhile, the Kremlin reiterated its intent to continue military operations until its objectives are met.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Russian escalation, saying the onslaught proved that Moscow had “no intention of ending the war and terror.” He added, “This is clear evidence that without truly large-scale pressure, Russia will not change its dumb, destructive behavior.” Zelensky specifically called on the U.S. and allies to intensify sanctions and increase military support.
The attack triggered widespread air alerts, especially in Kyiv, where AFP journalists reported loud explosions and the constant hum of drones. Residents were seen taking shelter in metro stations throughout the night.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga accused Russia of showing “complete disregard for the United States and everyone who has called for an end to the war,” pointing to the attack as a direct snub to diplomatic efforts.
While Ukraine continues to defend against the unrelenting barrages, concerns are growing over the sustainability of Western aid. The U.S. recently announced a reduction in certain categories of military support, prompting EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to urge European nations to “step up” their contributions.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has also stepped up its own drone operations across the Russian border. In one such incident, a Ukrainian drone reportedly crashed into an apartment building in Russia, killing a woman, according to regional officials.
As diplomacy stalls and violence escalates, the war in Ukraine appears poised for a dangerous new chapter, with civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire and international pressure mounting on all sides.
