Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has issued his first public reaction following a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and led to the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both members of Joshua’s inner circle. The boxer sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Joshua, 36, was treated at a hospital and discharged on New Year’s Eve before returning to the United Kingdom on Saturday.
On Sunday, the former heavyweight champion broke his silence via his social media platforms, posting a photograph of himself alongside the families of the deceased. He captioned the image, “My Brother’s Keeper,” in what appeared to be a message of solidarity and support.
The image showed Joshua standing with the bereaved families as they mourn the loss of their loved ones. Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele are scheduled to be buried later on Sunday.
Reports indicated that the crash occurred after Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck, allegedly due to brake failure. The vehicle was said to be conveying the boxer and three other occupants at the time of the incident.
Joshua was reportedly in Nigeria on holiday following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul. He narrowly avoided death after switching from the front passenger seat to the back shortly before the collision, a move said to have been prompted by concerns that his size was obstructing the driver’s view.
Although he sustained a leg fracture, sources said Joshua remained in stable condition and did not require emergency medical intervention.
