In a dazzling display of tennis prowess, the world’s second-ranked women’s player, Iga Swiatek, powered her way into the final of the China Open with a commanding victory over Coco Gauff on Saturday. The Polish sensation handed the American her first defeat in 17 matches, sealing her place in the championship match with a dominant performance.
Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam winner, showed her class as she dismantled the US Open champion, Gauff, with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-3. The match proved to be one-sided from the outset, as Swiatek seized the advantage early in the first set and never allowed Gauff, who seemed to be plagued by errors and an apparent shoulder injury, to gain a foothold in the match.
The Polish star wasted no time in securing a double break of serve and ultimately claimed the first set when Gauff sent a forehand crashing into the net. Swiatek continued her dominance in the second set, breaking Gauff’s serve in the opening game. The match briefly paused as Gauff received treatment for her shoulder injury, but Swiatek resumed her relentless attack, ultimately sealing the win when the young American hit yet another forehand into the net.
Coco Gauff had been on a remarkable 17-match winning streak since her last defeat to compatriot Jessica Pegula in Montreal in August, making Swiatek’s victory all the more impressive.
Swiatek’s opponent in the China Open women’s final will be determined in the other semi-final match later on Saturday, where world number five Elena Rybakina will face off against Liudmila Samsonova, ranked 22nd. Rybakina’s path to the final was paved by her straight-sets victory over the top-ranked women’s player and tournament favorite, Aryna Sabalenka, in the previous round.
This year’s China Open holds special significance as it marks the return of the tournament after a two-year hiatus. Beijing’s isolationist zero-Covid policy had prevented the event from taking place since 2019. The men’s competition concluded earlier in the week, with Italy’s Jannik Sinner clinching the title by defeating world number three Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling final.
