Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has received widespread acclaim from fans following his recognition as the Footballer of the Year by the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) for his outstanding performance with Napoli during the 2022/23 season. The award ceremony, which took place on Monday night, celebrated excellence in various categories, including Team of The Year, Coach of The Year, Club of The Year, and Goal of The Season.
Osimhen’s remarkable contribution of 26 goals played a crucial role in securing Napoli’s first Scudetto in 33 years. The striker’s exceptional form not only earned him the AIC Oscar del Calcio but also positioned him as a nominee for prestigious awards like the FIFA Best and Ballon d’Or, where he achieved an impressive eighth place in the final rankings.
The Nigerian forward also secured a spot in the Serie A Team of The Year, alongside standout players such as Mike Maignan, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Kim Min-jae, Andrea Bastoni, Theo Hernández, Stanislav Lobotka, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolo Barella, Rafael Leão, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Despite initial challenges in the 2023/24 campaign and recent injury setbacks, Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess remains evident, with an impressive six goals from 10 league appearances. Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Osimhen took to the social media platform X, saying, “Thank you @GranGalaAIC for the recognition and awards, thank you to my family, friends, and supporters for your votes and unending support. GOD is the Greatest.”
