David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, remains a prominent figure in Nigeria and across Africa, but his journey in the limelight has been marked by numerous scandals and controversies. The latest involves fellow singer Tiwa Savage, who recently filed a petition alleging harassment by Davido due to her close relationship with Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, Imade.
Sophia Momodu, represented by her legal team Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, has also taken a stand against Davido, threatening legal action over claims of threats to her life, cyberbullying, and harassment. A ‘cease and desist’ letter was issued to Davido, accusing him of using defamatory language and sponsoring negative publications about her. Despite a previous warning letter, Sophia contends that Davido continues to damage her reputation online.
The tumultuous history between Davido and Sophia has been riddled with conflicts. In 2016, a public uproar ensued when accusations surfaced that Davido and his family were attempting to kidnap Imade and take her to Dubai without Sophia’s consent. The situation was later resolved, with Imade reunited with her mother.
Davido, in response to past controversies, claimed that Sophia had made excessive financial demands on him and accused her of neglecting Imade’s well-being. He detailed on social media, alleging that Sophia was more focused on a nightlife of clubbing and substance abuse, neglecting her responsibilities as a mother.
Despite intermittent periods of apparent reconciliation between the co-parents, tensions flared up again in 2020. Reports emerged that Davido had traveled to Ghana with Sophia, but he clarified on Instagram that he only provided transportation for them due to his daughter’s presence. Sophia countered, stating she did not request a lift from him.
Further strains emerged in November 2022 when Sophia faced backlash for publishing Imade’s alleged birthday letter to Davido on social media. The letter reportedly honored Davido’s late brother, Ifeanyi, and stirred controversy.
In June 2023, Sophia claimed that Davido was neglecting his parental responsibilities, contemplating changing Imade’s last name as she played the roles of both father and mother. Earlier that year, Sophia had been criticized online for allegedly preventing Davido from seeing Imade due to his refusal to meet certain demands.
As the controversies escalate, the public watches closely, expressing concern for the innocent child caught in the midst of the ongoing disputes between her parents.
