A deadly tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State, has resulted in the deaths of 86 people, according to Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

Arah disclosed on Sunday that 80 victims were interred in a mass grave at the Dikko Primary Health Care premises, while relatives claimed five bodies for private burials. Another victim succumbed to injuries at the healthcare center, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to 86.

Incident Details

The tragedy unfolded when a fuel tanker traveling from Kaduna to Gwagwalada overturned at the junction, spilling its highly flammable contents. Despite warnings to stay away from the accident site, a crowd gathered to scoop the leaking fuel.

In a devastating turn of events, the tanker exploded, causing widespread fatalities, severe injuries, and extensive property damage estimated at millions of naira.

Rescue and Burial Efforts

Emergency responders, local government officials, and community volunteers worked tirelessly to handle the aftermath. The mass burial, organized by NSEMA, began at 5 p.m. on Sunday and extended into the night, concluding at midnight.

Arah confirmed that 55 individuals sustained injuries in the explosion and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Community Impact

The explosion has left the community in shock and mourning. Residents described the incident as one of the most tragic events in recent memory. Many expressed anger and frustration over the lack of safety measures and poor handling of fuel transportation.

Authorities Respond

In response to the incident, Abdullahi Baba Arah extended his condolences to the families of the victims and called for stricter enforcement of safety protocols for fuel transportation.

“This tragic incident underscores the need for public awareness about the dangers of approaching fuel spill sites and the importance of adhering to safety warnings,” Arah said.

Looking Ahead

The Niger State government has vowed to investigate the incident thoroughly and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Community leaders and safety advocates have also urged for better education on the dangers of fuel accidents to minimize the risk of loss of life.

The Dikko Junction explosion serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of fuel tanker accidents and the urgent need for preventive measures to safeguard lives and property.
