Lagos, Nigeria — The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, CP Waheed Ayilara, has died in Lagos after a brief illness. He passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, leaving colleagues and associates in shock and mourning.

CP Ayilara, a seasoned law enforcement officer with decades of dedicated service, reportedly walked into LASUTH on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, for a scheduled surgical procedure. Tragically, complications arose, leading to his untimely demise on Thursday morning.

Sudden Passing After Social Engagements

Just days before his passing, CP Ayilara was seen in high spirits attending two significant social events in Lagos. On Tuesday, he graced the wedding ceremony of his superior’s son and later attended the combined retirement and birthday celebration of a senior colleague. Attendees at both events described him as lively and engaging, showing no signs of discomfort or illness.

“We were together at the party, and he was his usual self—laughing, joking, and interacting warmly with everyone,” a close colleague recounted. “His sudden death is shocking and deeply saddening. It’s hard to believe that someone so full of life just a few days ago is no longer with us.”

Another attendee added, “CP Ayilara was in excellent spirits during the celebrations. He congratulated the newlyweds and celebrated wholeheartedly with our retiring colleague. There was no indication that he was unwell. His passing has left a huge void in our hearts.”

A Distinguished Career in Law Enforcement

CP Waheed Ayilara had a distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force, marked by professionalism, integrity, and commitment to duty. Before his appointment as the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, he served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba, Lagos, where he was instrumental in solving numerous high-profile cases and improving investigative procedures.

Throughout his career, Ayilara was known for his strategic approach to policing, community engagement, and efforts to curb crime through intelligence-led initiatives. Colleagues and subordinates admired his leadership style, describing him as approachable, compassionate, and firm when necessary.

“He was not just a boss but a mentor and father figure to many of us,” said a unit head at the SCID, Yaba. “His guidance and support have shaped the careers of numerous officers. He believed in building a police force that was respected and trusted by the community.”

In Akwa Ibom State, CP Ayilara continued his legacy of effective policing by enhancing security measures, fostering community-police relations, and implementing programs aimed at reducing crime rates. His efforts contributed significantly to the peace and stability enjoyed in the state during his tenure.

Nationwide Condolences and Tributes

News of CP Ayilara’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from across the country. The Inspector-General of Police expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Ayilara as a dedicated and exemplary officer whose contributions to national security were invaluable.

“We have lost one of our finest officers,” the Inspector-General stated. “CP Ayilara’s commitment to duty and service to the nation was unparalleled. His death is a great loss to the Nigeria Police Force and the country at large. We pray for strength and comfort for his family during this difficult time.”

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State also extended his condolences to the Ayilara family and the police community, acknowledging the late commissioner’s efforts in maintaining law and order in the state.

“CP Ayilara’s tenure in Akwa Ibom was marked by diligence and a proactive approach to security,” Governor Emmanuel said. “He worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of our citizens, and his legacy will continue to inspire us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Funeral Arrangements Pending

As the news continues to send shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the nation, funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family. Colleagues, friends, and well-wishers are expected to pay their respects and honor the life and service of CP Waheed Ayilara in the coming days.

A Legacy of Service

CP Ayilara leaves behind a legacy of dedication, courage, and service. His contributions to the Nigeria Police Force and the safety of the communities he served will not be forgotten. He is survived by his wife, children, and numerous relatives who now mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, and public servant.

As the nation grieves, many remember CP Ayilara’s commitment to justice and his unwavering dedication to making Nigeria a safer place for all. His sudden departure serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact one individual can have through selfless service.
