Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly rejected suggestions that he may serve as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, declaring that he is solely focused on running for president.
His reaction followed comments by media entrepreneur and Atiku Abubakar’s ally, Dele Momodu, who suggested that the former Rivers State governor could be considered as a potential running mate if Labour Party’s Peter Obi declines to run on a joint ticket with Atiku.
Momodu had said Amaechi’s political influence was underestimated, noting his significant contribution to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 victory.
Responding through his spokesperson, David Iyofor, Amaechi distanced himself from any alliance or discussion involving a vice-presidential slot.
“Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not,” Iyofor said.
He added that Amaechi believes the South should produce Nigeria’s next president and is committed to pursuing the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody. Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate,” Iyofor stressed.
Amaechi, who contested the APC presidential primaries in 2023 before defecting to the ADC, has already declared his intention to seek the party’s nomination ahead of the 2027 election.
