The political turmoil in Rivers State has intensified as the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the 27 APC members in the House of Assembly to initiate an impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move comes amidst escalating tensions between the APC and the state government.
In response to the APC’s demand, the state government has strongly criticized the call for impeachment, labeling it baseless and lacking in legitimacy. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Joseph Johnson, asserted that the 27 lawmakers lacked the moral authority to impeach the sitting governor, emphasizing that their actions were driven by self-interest rather than the welfare of the state.
The caretaker committee chairman of the Rivers State APC, Chief Tony Okocha, condemned Governor Fubara’s recent declaration that the APC lawmakers do not exist in the eyes of the law. Okocha described the governor’s statement as an attempt to rewrite the constitution and accused him of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies.
Meanwhile, despite the political unrest, Governor Fubara is poised to mark his first anniversary in office with a series of monumental projects set to be commissioned across the state. The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, unveiled a 20-day program of activities, which includes the commissioning of key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and development in the region.
The forthcoming events are expected to further fuel the ongoing political dispute between the APC and the state government, highlighting the deep-seated divisions within Rivers State’s political landscape.
