Tragedy struck on Friday as a stampede at a rice sale organized by the Nigeria Customs Service claimed the lives of seven individuals, including Comfort Adebanjo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The ruling party confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday through an obituary message released to mourn the deceased and express condolences to their families.
The incident occurred during an attempt by citizens to purchase seized rice, which the Customs Service intended to distribute directly to Nigerians to alleviate the economic hardships faced by many. This decision came in response to widespread demonstrations against the rising cost of living and food insecurity in the country.
Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the Customs Service, had earlier announced plans to distribute seized food items but emphasized the necessity of certifying their fitness for consumption before distribution.
The stampede, which resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives, including Adebanjo’s, prompted deep sorrow and reflection within the APC community. Oluwafemi Fadahunsi, the Coordinator of FKL Ward E1 in Lagos State, along with Secretary Comrade Adebari Adewale, confirmed Adebanjo’s unfortunate passing during the chaotic events.
In the obituary released by the party on Saturday, Adebanjo was remembered as a valued member of FKL Ward E1, with prayers offered for her family and the entire community to find strength in the face of this irreparable loss.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the stampede, the APC and the wider community mourn the lives lost and grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event.
