In a recent development in Kaduna State politics, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended its Women’s Leader, Maryam Suleiman, following her criticism of Governor Uba Sani’s handling of the state’s debt inherited from the previous administration.
The suspension notice, dated March 31, 2024, cited allegations of gross misconduct against Suleiman. It was signed by Ali Maishago and Zakkah Bassahuwa, the Chairman and Secretary of the Badarawa/Malali ward, respectively.
Governor Sani, during a Town Hall Meeting, had bemoaned the substantial debt left behind by his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, stating that the state was financially strained and struggling to meet salary obligations due to the debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities.
However, Suleiman, in a viral video conducted in Hausa language, criticized Governor Sani’s remarks and accused him of mismanagement. She urged him to desist from shifting blame to El-Rufai for his own failures.
The APC, in response, alleged that Suleiman was involved in orchestrating an attack on the political adviser to the governor, Manzo Maigari, reportedly carried out by thugs. Citing Article 21, 2 (v) of the APC Constitution, the party announced an indefinite suspension pending a thorough investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Governor Sani’s spokesman, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu, dismissed criticisms from El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, who had accused the governor of shirking responsibilities and surrounding himself with incompetent aides. Shehu reiterated the governor’s stance on the state’s financial status, emphasizing that addressing pressing issues took precedence over responding to trivialities.
