Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are gearing up for a challenging match against surprise title contenders Stuttgart, seeking redemption after their humbling defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. The encounter with third-placed Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Sunday promises an exciting showdown between two of Europe’s in-form strikers, Bayern’s Harry Kane, and Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy.
Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, currently trailing early leaders Bayer Leverkusen by four points (albeit with a game in hand), are looking to recover from their 5-1 loss to Frankfurt. Stuttgart, just one point behind Bayern, aims to leapfrog the champions in the table.
Since joining from Tottenham in the summer, Harry Kane has been a revelation for Bayern, boasting an impressive 18 goals in 13 league matches. Meanwhile, Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy closely follows the English captain with 16 goals from 12 Bundesliga appearances, marking a career-best tally for the 27-year-old, achieved in less than half the season.
Guirassy, with a remarkable goals-per-minute ratio of one goal every 55 minutes, has played a pivotal role in Stuttgart’s resurgence under coach Sebastian Hoeness. Hoeness, the nephew of former Bayern president Uli and former coach of Bayern’s reserve team, took charge of Stuttgart in April when the club was languishing at the bottom. Under his guidance, Stuttgart secured a two-legged relegation playoff victory over Hamburg and reached the German Cup semi-finals last season.
The five-time German champions, now under Hoeness, have continued their impressive form this season, winning 13 of 17 matches and staying competitive with a 1-1 draw against Leverkusen last Sunday.
Bayern, coming off their worst league loss this century, are looking to bounce back. The absence of key players like Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, and Noussair Mazraoui due to injuries poses a challenge for the defending champions. Matthijs de Ligt’s return to training offers a potential boost, although his participation on Sunday remains uncertain.
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer acknowledged Stuttgart’s momentum, describing them as a “very good team growing together nicely under a top manager.”
In other weekend fixtures, Leverkusen faces Frankfurt on Sunday, Dortmund visits Augsburg, and RB Leipzig hosts Hoffenheim on Saturday. Keep an eye on Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, the English teenager who has emerged as a key creative force for the team, gaining praise from compatriot Jude Bellingham.
