BREAKING: Appeal Court Confirms Death Sentence for Ramon Adedoyin Over Murder of OAU Student

AKURE, ONDO STATE – The Court of Appeal in Akure has upheld the death sentence handed to Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, a prominent hotelier, for his involvement in the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The judgment, delivered on Thursday, affirmed the ruling of the Osun State High Court, which had earlier convicted Adedoyin and sentenced him to death.

Case Background

The tragic events began in November 2021, when Adegoke, a Master’s student at OAU’s Distance Learning Centre, traveled from Abuja to Ile-Ife, Osun State, to sit for his examinations scheduled for November 6 and 7. Adegoke lodged at Hilton Hotels and Resorts, owned by Adedoyin, on November 5.

Shortly after, Adegoke went missing, prompting a police investigation. Days later, his lifeless body was discovered buried in a shallow grave. The police investigation revealed foul play, and Adedoyin, along with several hotel staff members, was arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

Appellate Court’s Decision

In its ruling, the Court of Appeal dismissed Adedoyin’s appeal, affirming the validity of his conviction and the death sentence imposed by the lower court.

“The judgment of the High Court of Osun State stands. Adedoyin’s appeal is dismissed in part. The Court of Appeal held that Adedoyin was properly convicted and sentenced to death,” the appellate court ruled.

However, the appellate court overturned certain aspects of the lower court’s judgment. The order mandating the forfeiture of Hilton Hotels was quashed, as was the directive requiring Adedoyin and others to provide education scholarships to the children of the late Adegoke.

Public Reaction

The case has drawn widespread public attention, with many Nigerians closely following the trial and subsequent appeals. Advocacy groups and citizens alike have called for justice for Adegoke, whose murder has become a symbol of the need for accountability and fairness in the justice system.

Adedoyin’s conviction and the appellate court’s decision have been viewed as a victory for justice, though the case continues to highlight the pervasive issue of security and the misuse of power in Nigeria.

Next Steps

With the Court of Appeal affirming the death sentence, the focus now shifts to whether Adedoyin will seek a final appeal at the Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in Nigeria.

For Adegoke’s family, the appellate court’s decision represents a significant step toward closure, but the pain of losing their loved one remains a poignant reminder of the tragedy.

As the legal process unfolds, this case will likely serve as a reference point for future matters involving high-profile crimes and the pursuit of justice in Nigeria.
