Birmingham City has decided to part ways with Wayne Rooney as the team’s manager, following a disappointing 15-match run, as reported by Daily Mail UK. The football legend, formerly of Manchester United, took on the role of Blues boss in October, but his tenure saw only two victories.
The decision to terminate Rooney’s position came after a significant setback, with Birmingham City suffering a 3-0 defeat against Leeds on Monday night. This defeat marked the ninth loss under Rooney’s management, resulting in the team’s position languishing at 20th in the Championship standings.
Despite Rooney’s determination to continue after the Leeds match, a meeting was convened at the club’s training ground on Tuesday, where staff members were informed of the decision to relieve Rooney of his managerial duties.
The 38-year-old, who previously had managerial stints with Derby County and MLS side DC United, faced challenges in steering Birmingham City to success during his brief tenure.
