A Kano State High Court delivered a landmark judgment yesterday, sentencing Frank Geng Quangrong, a Chinese national residing in Railway Quarters Kano, to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Buhari.
The trial, presided over by Justice Sanusi Ma’aji, found Frank guilty on one count charge of culpable homicide, ruling that the prosecution had successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
In his verdict, Justice Ma’aji highlighted inconsistencies in Frank’s testimony and recommended clemency from the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict. He emphasized the gravity of the offense and the need for justice to be served.
According to the prosecution counsel, Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, the incident occurred on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters Kano. Frank allegedly stabbed Ummukulsum to death with a knife in her residence, leading to her demise at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano.
Expressing satisfaction with the judgment, Attorney General Haruna Dederi hailed it as a significant victory for the state’s justice system.
However, the defense counsel, Muhammad Dan’zumi, announced plans to appeal the verdict at the Court of Appeal, citing grounds for appeal identified within the judgment. The decision sets the stage for further legal proceedings in this high-profile case, underscoring the complexities of justice and the pursuit of truth in Kano State.
