Less than a year before the commencement of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Mayor Anne Hidalgo has raised doubts about the city’s transport system’s readiness, triggering backlash from political adversaries. As the event approaches, Paris’s transport infrastructure is already grappling with significant challenges, including complaints from commuters and tourists about poor frequency, overcrowding, and cleanliness issues. Speaking on the Quotidien talk show on TMC TV, Hidalgo acknowledged that while the Games infrastructure will be prepared, concerns persist regarding transport and homelessness. Hidalgo pointed out ongoing challenges in daily transport, emphasizing the need for improved comfort and punctuality for Parisians. She indicated that certain areas may not be ready, leading to a potential shortage of trains. The mayor faced criticism from political opponents, compounded by recent controversies, including an extended trip to a French Pacific territory, labeled as “Tahitigate.” Critics accused Hidalgo of attempting to conceal her absence by sharing archived images on social media, including a video of her cycling along the Seine. Transport Minister Clement Beaune, an ally of President Emmanuel Macron, accused Hidalgo of absenteeism from crucial committee meetings on transport infrastructure. Valerie Pecresse, head of the Ile-de-France region, expressed confidence in readiness, thanking transport staff for their efforts. However, she criticized the absent mayor, emphasizing the collective effort required for success. Hidalgo, addressing homelessness concerns during the Olympics, expressed the intention to find a lasting solution to people sleeping on the streets and inside metro stations in Paris. While acknowledging the need for progress, she acknowledged that challenges still exist.
