Court Frees Anthony Joshua’s Driver on Bail, Defers Case to Feb. 25

A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver who conveyed former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, and members of his team before a fatal road accident late last year.

Kayode was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, while the court adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.

The 46-year-old is facing trial over a crash that led to the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

He was arraigned on January 2, 2026, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The alleged offences are said to contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

During the hearing, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, sought an adjournment to allow the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, stating that the defence was prepared to proceed with trial. However, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the case to February 25.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, Kayode, and the two aides reportedly rammed into a stationary truck. While Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, Ayodele and Ghami died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Joshua was later discharged from hospital after being certified clinically stable and subsequently visited a Lagos funeral home with his mother to pay his last respects before the remains of the deceased were repatriated to the United Kingdom.

Funeral prayers for Ayodele and Ghami were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque, as tributes poured in from across the global boxing community, where both men were regarded as integral members of Joshua’s team.
