Dangote Prioritises Africa’s Industrial Revolution Over Billionaire Status

Africa’s foremost industrialist and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has said his greatest ambition is to be remembered for driving Africa’s industrial development rather than for his status as the continent’s richest individual.

Dangote made the remarks during a recent interview with James Dumoulin, founder of the School of Hard Knocks platform, where he discussed his business journey, wealth, and long-term vision for Africa.

Reflecting on his achievements, the billionaire businessman emphasized that creating industries capable of transforming economies across the continent has become more important to him than accumulating wealth or maintaining a position on global rich lists.

“I have actually passed the stage of just doing business to make money. I want to leave a legacy. I want to be remembered as somebody who has industrialised Africa,” Dangote said.

The founder of the Dangote Group, whose investments span cement, sugar, salt, fertiliser, and petroleum refining, suggested that public estimates of his fortune may not fully capture the value of his holdings. According to him, several of the group’s most valuable assets remain privately owned and have yet to be reflected in market valuations.

Responding to questions about his net worth, Dangote downplayed the figures often cited by international wealth trackers, noting that many of his companies are not yet publicly listed.

“They say I’m worth $38 billion, but most of our businesses are not listed yet,” he said, adding that the true value of his investments would become more apparent in the future.

Dangote also highlighted Africa’s vast economic potential, describing the continent as the world’s next major growth frontier. He pointed to the continent’s youthful population, noting that nearly 70 percent of Africans are under the age of 30 and that the population is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050.

“The real future is Africa,” he said, encouraging investors to take advantage of emerging opportunities across the continent.

The billionaire further disclosed that his companies generated approximately $10 billion in revenue during the first quarter of the year, underscoring the scale of operations within the Dangote Group.

Industry observers have continued to speculate about a future stock market listing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, one of Africa’s largest industrial projects. Analysts believe that any public offering of the refinery could significantly increase the market valuation of Dangote’s business empire and reshape perceptions of his personal wealth.

Beyond business, Dangote also spoke about his faith, reaffirming his belief in God and attributing much of his success to divine guidance.

His comments come at a time when the Dangote Group continues to expand its footprint across key sectors of the African economy, reinforcing its role as one of the continent’s most influential industrial conglomerates.
