The Defence Headquarters has refuted claims made by an online media outlet suggesting heightened alertness within the Presidential Guards Brigade due to suspected coup plotting around Nigeria’s seat of power.
In a statement issued by Brigadier Gen Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, the Defence Headquarters denounced the allegations as baseless and malicious. The statement clarified that the Guards Brigade is routinely tasked with safeguarding the Presidency and the Federal Capital Territory, necessitating a constant state of preparedness.
The Defence Headquarters emphasized that the alleged emergency meeting involving President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, and the Commander of the Guards Brigade, as reported in the online publication, never took place. It reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to upholding democracy and condemned the dissemination of unfounded rumors.
Furthermore, the Defence Headquarters called for appropriate action against the online media outlet responsible for spreading the false information, urging the public to disregard such claims. It also announced plans to pursue legal recourse against the outlet to address what it described as an attempt to create unnecessary tension in the country.
