In a triumphant display at the ATP Finals in Turin, Novak Djokovic clinched the year-end world number one ranking for an unprecedented eighth time by defeating Holger Rune in a thrilling three-set match on Sunday.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion entered the match needing only one victory or a loss for his young rival, Carlos Alcaraz, to solidify his top spot in the ATP rankings for 2023. Djokovic emerged victorious after a grueling Green Group clash that lasted three hours against the spirited debutant Rune.
Djokovic, 36, who is on a remarkable 19-match winning streak, has had a remarkable year, claiming three Grand Slam titles and becoming the all-time record holder for major titles. He arrived at the ATP Finals in Turin fresh from his seventh triumph at the Paris Masters, marking his 40th victory at a Masters 1000 event.
The seasoned player is now chasing a seventh ATP Finals title, which would surpass the achievement of the retired great Roger Federer. Djokovic expressed his emotions after the match, stating, “It means a lot. You could see that there were a lot of emotions on the court. I was very eager to win the match and get that monkey off my back… Obviously a big objective, a big goal has been achieved, everything else now is a bonus.”
Although Djokovic dominated the first set with a commanding tie-break win, Rune fought back in the second set, forcing a tie-break and ultimately securing the set. However, Djokovic regained control in the third set, sealing a historic win despite a brief setback when Rune broke back.
Reflecting on the challenging match, Djokovic acknowledged Rune’s brilliance, stating in Italian, “I found a way to win today against an opponent who played brilliantly… he had a lot of courage today. If I want to keep up with these youngsters, I’m going to have to work even harder!”
In another highlight of the ATP Finals, Italian Jannik Sinner delighted the local crowd by defeating 2019 champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Sinner, who has had a stellar season, is poised to become the first Italian to finish a season in the ATP top five.
On Monday, all eyes will be on Carlos Alcaraz as he makes his ATP Finals debut in the Red Group against Alexander Zverev, Djokovic’s closest competitor. The tournament continues to unfold with high stakes and intense competition among tennis’ elite.
