KANO — A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of the morning, ravaging the popular plywood market, Rijiyar Lemo, in Kano State, leaving in its wake a trail of destruction with over 50 shops reduced to ashes. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 a.m., resulted in the loss of goods worth millions of naira.
Mamuda Musa, the Chairman of the market, expressed dismay over the incident, highlighting that the fire consumed shops stocked with valuable merchandise, including plywood and various building materials. The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be determined, leaving the affected traders in distress.
“The incident started from around 1:30 a.m., up until around 8 a.m., when the fire was put out. We have over 50 shops loaded with goods such as plywood among other building materials which were burnt to ashes. Goods destroyed worth over N150 million. They are woods and building materials,” Musa lamented.
Nura Sani, one of the affected shop owners, shared his grief, stating that they were unable to salvage anything as the fire engulfed their shops entirely.
Confirming the incident, Saminu Yusif, the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, affirmed the severity of the situation, indicating that efforts were made to contain the blaze. However, the extensive damage caused by the fire underscores the urgent need for preventive measures to mitigate such tragedies in the future.
