An abducted medical doctor, Dr Ibrahim Tahir, has been released after his family reportedly paid a N50 million ransom to secure his freedom.
Dr Tahir was kidnapped alongside his younger brother on January 2, 2026, while opening the gate to their family residence on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, Edo State. The abduction sparked widespread concern within the community.
Tragedy struck days later when the body of Dr Tahir’s younger brother was discovered on January 5 near the Orley River along City Pride Road. He was reportedly killed by the abductors.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Thursday, the victims’ father disclosed that the ransom was paid in two instalments of N20 million and N30 million before the doctor was released on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m.
According to him, the funds were raised through the combined efforts of the family, non-governmental organisations, friends and other well-wishers.
He further revealed that Dr Tahir sustained a bullet graze on his leg during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical treatment. He also claimed that one of the kidnappers was injured during a confrontation with vigilantes and hunters prior to his son’s release.
“My son has been released after we paid N50 million. I am relieved that he is free, but we have also lost another son,” the father said. “The ransom was raised with the help of family members, organisations, friends and well-wishers. He was grazed by a bullet and is now being treated in hospital.”
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the development. The Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said on Thursday that the doctor had regained his freedom.
“I can confirm that the doctor has been released,” she stated.
