Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has issued a directive to security agencies to make the state hostile to criminal elements, particularly cultists, as part of his administration’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
The directive was delivered during an inaugural security meeting held on Monday night in Benin City, the state capital. In a statement issued Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that security remains a top priority for his administration.
Firm Stance on Cultism and Crime
Governor Okpebholo expressed his administration’s intolerance for the rising wave of cult-related violence, which has claimed several lives in recent weeks, particularly in Benin. He urged heads of security agencies to collaborate and intensify efforts to end the killings.
“During my campaign, I placed security above all else. It is a priority for my administration because it is critical to our state’s progress,” the governor said.
“The current rate of cultism is unacceptable. We cannot afford to lose more lives to these senseless acts of violence. My administration will not stand idly by while this menace persists. Criminals, wherever they are hiding, must be smoked out to ensure Edo remains safe for all residents,” he declared.
Action Plan for Enhanced Security
The governor called for:
- Inter-agency Collaboration: Security agencies were urged to work together to dismantle cult networks and apprehend perpetrators.
- Community Safety: Okpebholo highlighted the need for a secure environment to foster development and protect lives.
- Proactive Measures: The state government will deploy resources to ensure sustained security operations across affected areas.
Background of the Violence
Edo State has witnessed renewed cult clashes in recent weeks, with the violence concentrated in Benin City. The clashes have resulted in several fatalities, creating a climate of fear among residents.
The governor’s directive aims to send a strong message to criminal elements while reassuring citizens of the government’s commitment to their safety.
Community Involvement Encouraged
Governor Okpebholo also appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information that could aid the crackdown on cult groups and other criminal activities.
The administration’s proactive stance signals a new era of decisive action against the criminal networks that have threatened the peace and security of Edo State.
