Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has established a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate the actions and management of resources during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The decision underscores Okpebholo’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
The committee, chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, will be officially inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City. Other notable members include Anslem Ojezua as deputy chairman and Frank Edebor as secretary. The panel also features respected Edo State figures such as Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, and Patrick Obahiagbon, among others.
Purpose of the Committee
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the committee’s mandate was clarified.
“In furtherance of the governor’s initiative to set the state on the path of development and accountable leadership, the establishment of a State Assets Verification Committee has become imperative,” Itua stated.
He added that despite multiple requests for comprehensive records of the state’s assets and liabilities under Obaseki’s administration, the information provided was insufficient.
“This committee reflects the governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability, and transparency in governance. It comprises respected sons and daughters of Edo State committed to delivering this mandate,” the statement read.
Investigation Background
The formation of the committee follows reports from permanent secretaries across various state ministries regarding the previous administration. On November 20, The PUNCH reported that the state government was considering a deeper investigation into Obaseki’s tenure.
An unnamed government official revealed that Governor Okpebholo has been receiving briefings to evaluate the performance of the former administration.
“The governor is reviewing reports to determine the necessity and scope of a probe. These findings will guide the investigation process,” the official said.
Scope and Expectations
The committee is expected to provide a detailed assessment of state assets and liabilities, ensuring that no discrepancies remain unaddressed. The findings will play a crucial role in shaping the administration’s policies and strategies to safeguard public interest.
The probe marks a significant step in Governor Okpebholo’s mission to rebuild trust in Edo State governance, promising that the interests of the people will remain the administration’s top priority.
With the inauguration set for Tuesday, Edo State citizens and stakeholders eagerly await the outcome of this pivotal investigation.
