Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the renaming of Edo State University, Uzairue, to Edo University, Iyamho. This decision, announced on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, marks the latest development under Okpebholo’s administration.
Immediate Implementation
The statement from the Secretary to the State Government emphasized that the name change takes immediate effect and directed all official records and documents associated with the institution to reflect the new designation.
“It is hereby announced for the information of the general public that the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the change of the name of ‘Edo State University, Uzairue,’ to now be known as ‘Edo University, Iyamho’ with immediate effect. Accordingly, all documentation in respect of the institution henceforth shall reflect the above change,” the statement read.
The renaming of the university has sparked mixed reactions among residents and stakeholders, with some viewing it as a move to honor the institution’s host community, while others have called for clarity on the rationale behind the decision.
Addressing Past Grievances
In a separate announcement, the Edo State Government revealed its plans to address grievances stemming from alleged property acquisitions during the tenure of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie, disclosed that the previous administration had forcefully acquired community lands and properties without compensation, leading to widespread discontent.
Osagie stated that Governor Okpebholo’s administration is committed to righting these wrongs to restore harmony in the state. “The current administration will investigate all complaints regarding land and property acquisitions and ensure that individuals entitled to compensation receive what is due to them,” he said.
The Attorney General also assured residents that his ministry would handle all lawsuits meticulously to prevent potential distractions to governance.
Public Response
While the renaming of the university has generated debates among stakeholders, the announcement of compensation for affected property owners has been widely welcomed. Community leaders and residents have expressed optimism that the move will foster reconciliation and promote trust in the government.
Governor Okpebholo’s dual announcements highlight his administration’s focus on addressing legacy issues while forging a path for the state’s development. As the government begins the implementation of these decisions, the people of Edo await further updates on how these initiatives will impact the state’s education system and socio-economic landscape.
