BENIN CITY – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 24 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Benin City, Edo State. The suspects were apprehended by operatives from the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on Monday at various locations within the city.
In a statement shared on social media platform X.com on Wednesday, the EFCC confirmed the arrests, stating that they were based on actionable intelligence linking the individuals to computer-related fraud activities.
The statement read, “The suspects were arrested following credible intelligence of their involvement in computer-related fraud.” It further revealed that the EFCC recovered 11 luxury cars, several laptops, mobile phones, and a sum of N160,000 from one of the suspects during the operation.
The commission disclosed that the suspects are cooperating with investigators and have provided useful information. Once the ongoing investigation is completed, the suspects will be charged to court.
The arrests come just days after the EFCC’s Sokoto Zonal Directorate apprehended 13 suspected internet fraudsters in Sokoto State, as part of its continuous efforts to curb cybercrime across Nigeria.
The EFCC remains committed to tackling online fraud, warning that those engaged in such activities will face the full force of the law.
