The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has provided updates on ongoing investigations involving former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and popular cross-dresser Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky. During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, represented by Director of Public Affairs Wilson Uwujaren, addressed the agency’s progress on both cases.
The EFCC has intensified its investigation into Edu, scrutinizing her alleged misconduct during her tenure. To date, the agency has reportedly recovered N30 billion linked to her case and is reviewing 40 bank accounts connected to the former minister. Uwujaren highlighted the extensive nature of this probe, stating, “Monitoring over 40 accounts requires a meticulous approach to ensure a thorough investigation. These matters are ongoing.”
Turning to the case of Bobrisky, Uwujaren responded to recent bribery allegations involving the cross-dresser, affirming the EFCC’s commitment to internal integrity. Allegations surfaced that EFCC officials were bribed to dismiss money laundering charges against Bobrisky, a claim the agency is now actively investigating. “Regarding the allegations involving Bobrisky and VeryDarkman,” Uwujaren stated, “we are dedicated to a complete investigation. If any misconduct is identified, those responsible will face appropriate consequences.”
Uwujaren also addressed reports that a briefing had been given to President Bola Tinubu, leading to Edu’s replacement with a new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. He acknowledged the information shared by senior government spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that a report influenced the decision to appoint a new minister.
As these high-profile investigations progress, the EFCC reaffirms its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and commitment to transparency.
