Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), bringing an end to weeks of detention over allegations of financial misconduct.
His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development on Friday via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the statement, he expressed gratitude for the support received during the period, while strongly criticizing the anti-corruption agency over what he described as his father’s “unlawful” detention.
El-Rufai had been held by the ICPC since February 18 as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities and related offences. However, as of the time of reporting, the commission has not issued an official statement clarifying the conditions surrounding his release.
The development comes on a sombre note for the family, as news also emerged that El-Rufai’s mother, Umma El-Rufai, passed away earlier on Friday in Cairo.
