Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has ruled out contesting for any elective office in the 2027 general elections, insisting that his return to active politics is driven by the need to support credible leadership rather than personal ambition.
El-Rufai made the declaration on Wednesday in Kaduna while welcoming a group of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The former Federal Capital Territory Minister explained that after completing his tenure as governor in 2023, his initial plan was to withdraw from partisan politics and take a break. However, he noted that unfolding developments in the country convinced him to re-engage in political activities, though with a different focus.
“I am not contesting for anything. I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not seeking any position,” El-Rufai said. “When I finished my tenure as governor, I intended to rest. But given the way things have turned out, I believe we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics.”
He emphasized that his priority now is mentoring young Nigerians, women, and reform-driven leaders to actively participate in governance and help shape the nation’s future.
The former governor also encouraged young people in Kaduna and across Nigeria to seize the opportunity of the ongoing voter registration exercise, stressing that their involvement is critical to transforming the country’s political landscape.
