Former MTN Group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa has passed away after succumbing to cancer on Monday morning. Dabengwa, who led MTN from March 2011 to 2015, resigned during a challenging period for the company, as it faced a record N1.04 trillion fine in Nigeria for failing to disconnect over five million unregistered SIM cards.
Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa had a distinguished career in the telecommunications industry. Before becoming MTN Group CEO, he served briefly as CEO of MTN Nigeria until 2006. His leadership tenure at MTN was characterized by significant advancements in the industry, marked by his visionary approach, integrity, and dedication.
South African media confirmed his death, quoting family spokesperson Themba Sibanyoni. Sibanyoni described Dabengwa as a “titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman” who left a legacy that extended beyond the boardroom. He highlighted Dabengwa’s advocacy for education and his strong belief in the power of technology to transform lives.
An MTN executive, speaking from the company’s headquarters in Johannesburg, expressed shock and sorrow at Dabengwa’s passing, noting that the entire MTN family is in mourning. Despite stepping down as CEO, Dabengwa remained a significant figure within the organization, respected for his years of progressive leadership.
Dabengwa had been battling cancer for some time and passed away in the early hours of Monday. His death marks the end of a notable chapter in the telecommunications industry, where his contributions continue to be felt.
